Red Dead Redemption 2: The old wild west and the cowboy era has always excited us. Be it for the machismo and the charisma that time holds, or for the long barreled guns, bandit shooting, cigars and horse riding, we have always dreamt of living in that era. While Hollywood has gifted us many classic movies based on that time, Rockstar has successfully portrayed that carefree era in their action-adventure video game, Red Dead Redemption. This immensely popular open world game developed by Rockstar San Diego and published by Rockstar Games, was released in May 2010, and since then the game freaks are literally eagerly waiting for the second instalment, the Red Dead Redemption 2 to get unveiled. While the developers were tight-lipped about the Red Dead Redemption 2 release date or the existence of the game for the last five years, recently, in last October, they launched the brand new trailer of this highly-anticipated game, and we can only use one word for it; jaw-dropping.
The Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer works like magic to the worldwide fans of this franchise. The excitement, as well as the expectation, both, have been multiplied exponentially with this minute-long trailer launch. We all know how much fame and acclamation the previous iteration received throughout the world. With more than 14 million copies shipped all over the world, people just love John Marston, and his fight for justice to set his wife and son free who are taken hostage by the government in ransom for his services as a hired gun.
Now the question arises,
- will Red Dead Redemption 2 be able to live up to this much expectation?
- What does the upcoming game have up on their sleeve?
- What new features Red Dead Redemption 2 will offer to their fans?
- Will there be any changes in the gameplay?
There are loads of questions currently going on regarding Red Dead Redemption 2. So in this one-stop article, we have tried to answer all the questions, solve all the puzzles and decoded one of the hotly-anticipated video game of 2017.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Story/Plotline
The Red Dead Redemption is set in the year of 1911, during the decline of the American Frontier. But the speculation is, the upcoming iteration is going to be a prequel rather than a sequel and will depict an earlier version of the Wild West. The reason behind the speculation? Recently, the map of the upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2 has leaked online. Although the person who leaked the map, pulled it down hastily, a source close to the development of the upcoming third-person game has revealed that this is a "very recent" art direction map for the Red Dead Redemption 2 and is a real deal indeed. The leaked map confirms that the upcoming iteration will be set just east of the current instalment and features the Great Plains, home to the Blackwater settlement.
- Now if you compare the leaked map of the Red Dead redemption 2 with the map featured in the Red Dead Redemption, you will notice, the upcoming iteration features less number of railroads in the Great Plains, unlike the existing version. Not only that, the leaked map also reveals that there will be caravan camps scattered around in the Red Dead Redemption 2, which clearly indicates this will be a less occupied West.
- Moreover, if you notice the minute long trailer of the Red Dead Redemption 2, you will see common horses and carts of the late 19th century as well as an older looking steam train. So all these features indicate that Red Dead Redemption 2 will actually be a prequel rather than a sequel to the earlier instalment and we might play as John Marston in his younger days or as Marston's father.
Red Dead Redemption 2: Characters
The previous edition, Red Dead Redemption is based on the life of John Marston, his wife Abigail Marston and their son Jack. Apart from the protagonist, characters like Bill Williamson, Bonnie MacFarlane, Leigh Johnson, Colonel Agustín Allende, Captain Vincente de Santa, Javier Escuella, Landon Ricketts-all play a crucial part in the story line of this open world action-adventure game. Now the question is who will feature in the Red Dead Redemption 2? The image Rockstar releases while announcing the game's release date, features seven people. Although it is tough to say who are those characters, we can surely say one thing; no woman is going to feature in the gang.
- If you closely look at that image, the third person from the right has striking similarities with Bill Williamson, especially for the rifle he is carrying.
- The person in the middle looks like John Marston, more precisely a younger John Marston. So the speculation is the Dutch's Gang is making a comeback in the Red Dead Redemption 2 too, and most of the characters of this upcoming video game have already been featured in the previous instalment.
- Another notable feature Red Dead Redemption 2 will offer to the gamers is the option of playing with more players apart from the protagonist John Marston. A tipster, who has already predicted two GTA Online updates successfully, claims recently that the upcoming Rockstar game will come with multiple playable protagonists, most likely three, just like Grand Theft Auto 5. Recently, the CEO of Take-Two, Strauss Zelnick commented in an interview that Red Dead Redemption 2 will offer "incredible emotional depth" with "great story elements and great gameplay elements." So we hope that Red Dead Redemption 2 characters will be as enigmatic and as charismatic as the characters of the previous iteration.
One of the most notable facts about Red Dead Redemption 2 is that the new game will be a prequel to its 2010 predecessor (as elaborated elsewhere in this article). But while we do not have a lot of information about what we may end up seeing in the upcoming title, the revelation actually manages to open up a number of possibilities. Besides the possibility of being able to see a much younger John Marston during his years of shaping up as a bona fide outlaw, we also potentially stand the chance of seeing some other returning characters from the previous game.
As is to be expected with such a big rumor, fans have really started digging into the possibilities and while some of their methods can safely be termed as maniacal stalking, it has actually given us some great insights into the new game. And it now appears that a lot of the actors from Red Dead Redemption are working on the upcoming game. We will remind you to take all of these with a healthy dose of salt, but the prospects of seeing John Marston and some of his rivals coming back to life during a previous time certainly feels exciting.
There are a number of new actors coming on board Red Dead Redemption 2 as well, though we don’t quite know which characters they will be portraying. But we think it is safe to assume that they will depict the many new characters that the new game is bound to bring in. Among the ones that we have come to know about, some are quite famous, having lent their skills to some notable projects in the past. Matt Bradford, who has worked in the biography film The Last Ride, posted on his professional bio that his current projects include Red Dead Redemption 2, though he took it down as soon as people started going bonkers. Another well-known actor, who has lent his voice to Take Two Interactive’s own Mafia 3 among other huge names, has also been signed on to play a cowboy. Ethan Korver, however, maintains that the role is a minor one.
Whatever be the case, we hope to see a lot of dynamic and well fleshed out characters in Red Dead Redemption 2, and yes, we do hope to see Marston again.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Features
- As we have already discussed above, the probable map of the Red Dead Redemption 2 has been leaked online and the sources closely working with this project has also confirmed it as a "very recent" art direction map for the upcoming title. Although there are questions regarding the authenticity of the leaked map, and it will remain so until the game releases in the coming Fall, according to the leaked map, the upcoming game will be staged just east of the map featured in Red Dead Redemption. Moreover, Great Plains, the home to the Blackwater settlement, will again be featured in the Red Dead Redemption 2, albeit this time it will be less populated and less explored.

The leaked map of the Red Dead Redemption 2 also features fewer numbers of railroads, which indicates that the upcoming instalment is going to be a prequel, rather than a sequel to the existing version. You can also notice caravan camps scattered around throughout the leaked map, suggesting again that the Wild West will be less occupied this time. Another interesting feature the leaked map possesses is the inclusion of islands, located among the rivers and large expanses of water. Red Dead Redemption does not allow the players to swim, but we hope in the coming version, the gamers will be facilitated with this option.
The surprising package does not conclude here. The leaked map of the Red Dead Redemption 2 includes New Bordeaux at the bottom right. Mafia 3, another highly rated video game, which has been released last October by the parent company of Rockstar, Take-Two, is based in New Bordeaux, a fictional location based on New Orleans. So we are looking forward to seeing how much crossover there will be between the two games.
Rockstar has always been famous for incorporating high-end graphics in their video games, be it Red Dead Redemption or the entire GTA franchise. So we can expect top-notch graphics in this upcoming Rockstar title too. And as morning shows the day, the eye-gazing trailer of Red Dead Redemption 2 has already promised a lot as per the graphics part is concerned. The gorgeous showcase of the open world, the deserts and the barren lands, the wild animals, even the steam rail featured in the trailer has assured us that the Red Dead Redemption 2 graphics is going to be the talk of the town as soon as the game releases in Fall 2017. Moreover, Rockstar is currently updating the RAGE (Rockstar Advanced Game Engine) engine so that they can add more realistic touch to the graphics of this upcoming action-adventure game.
The hyper-popular online multiplayer mode is one of the most highlighting points of the Red Dead Redemption and Rockstar has been praised massively for this move. In this multiplayer mode, a maximum of 16 players can play simultaneously per session. So it is quite natural that the multiplayer feature will again be repeated in the coming instalment too. Now the question is what new features will be added to the multiplayer option? Speculations are, Rockstar is thinking to include a Survival Mode in which the players would have to survive in the most adverse conditions. In this way, it will test the cohesive force between the co-players while playing multiplayer.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Gameplay
The open world, third-person, western, action-adventure gameplay of the Red Dead Redemption only allows the gamers to control John Marston. The players can engage in battles with the enemies and use various firearms. Different breeds of horses along with the trains are the main forms of transportation. Apart from the main storyline, the player character can witness as well as take part in random events such as public hangings, ambushes, pleas for assistance, encounters with strangers, ride-by shootings, and dangerous animal attacks while exploring the rugged and vast landscapes of the American West. The player can even loot items, horses and clothes; mainly for money.
- In the coming instalment, it is most likely that all these features will be present to keep the essence of the game intact. Along with, some new notable features will be added to the game. The biggest feature which is going to be added in the gameplay of Red Dead Redemption 2 is multiple playable protagonists. That means, unlike Red Dead Redemption, you can control and play with more than one characters.
One thing that we do know, thanks to actor Matt Bradford, is that motion capture will play a bog role in Red Dead Redemption 2. So expect a lot of realistic, detailed moves and expressions.
Apart from that, the option of swimming is going to be introduced in the game for the first time. Another interesting feature which is believed to make its debut in the Red Dead Redemption 2 is melee combat using our knives and bare hands. As the game will be set in the late 19th century, the melee combat will make the game more realistic and will make more exciting as well as fun to play.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Wishlist (What to Expect)
Both the previous instalments of the Red Dead Series were console-exclusive. Rockstar released the Red Dead Revolver in 2004 for the PlayStations only, while the next version, Red Dead Redemption comes with both Xbox and PS compatibility. So now the fans are demanding for the Red Dead Redemption 2 to get released on the PC too, particularly for the Windows 10. Even fans have signed petitions and submitted to Rockstar to draw their attention. If the developers make the upcoming game PC compatible, it will not only increase the sale and revenue but will also allow more gamers to play this magnificent game. So we hope Rockstar will release the Red Dead Redemption 2 across all platforms(PS 4, Xbox One, Windows 10 PC).
In Red Dead Redemption, shooting and looting play a major part. You can shoot your opponent and can loot their money, weapons, clothing, horses and other useful things. Then you can use those scavenged items directly for your own benefit or can trade or sell for money. But what if the upcoming iteration facilitates the players to use those looted items in a more creative way. And when we are talking about creativity, crafting is the first thing that comes up on our mind. Moreover, as the Red Dead Redemption 2 is going to be a prequel and will be set in an earlier timeframe, the players will get more chances to channelize their creativity through crafting. So we hope Rockstar will include the crafting feature in the upcoming western, open world, third-person video game.
We have already mentioned above, that Red Dead Redemption 2 is going to come with more than one playable protagonists. Although the developers have released a game poster with rugged-looking seven characters, we are not sure how many of them will be playable. Yes, it is true that no lady character has been featured in that poster, but there are chances that some of those characters could only be AI driven supporting characters and nothing more. So we hope Rockstar will introduce a female protagonist in the Wild West who will pursue her own revenge story. Besides, Rockstar is already thinking to introduce a lady protagonist in the upcoming GTA VI, so the same in the Red Dead Redemption 2 is very much plausible.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Release Date
Rockstar has announced that they are going to launch the Red Dead Redemption 2 for PS4 and Xbox One in Fall 2017, although the exact release date of the game is still unknown. We also don't know whether the game will be available on PC or not, but the developers have confirmed that the PS4 users will be the first to receive specific online content.
Although fans are expecting that western action-adventure video game Red Dead Redemption will bring out its sequel this year, but the game developers have some other plans. American video game publisher Rockstar Studios, who are the developers of the game, have confirmed that the release date has been shifted to fiscal year 2019. The parent of Red Dead Redemption, Take-Two Interactive have assured its fans and followers that the decision of moving the game’s release date to another year will not affect other Rockstar games.
Speaking on the issue, Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive has said that they have not run into any technical issue and they are just building RDR 2 as a new game from the ground up for the first time for the new generation of consoles. In defense of delaying the release date, Take-Two interactive has further said that they are trying to better the game, especially by utilizing Project Scorpio and PS4 Pro’s enhanced abilities.
Red Dead Redemption took the Western-based, open world, action adventure game to a all new height. The way it portrays that era, the culture, the people, that vast barren landscape, the guns of that time, the transportation system-its incredible. Red Dead Redemption was released by Rockstar seven years ago, in 2010, and in these seven years technology has advanced by leaps and bounds. So now imagine, if Rockstar can produce such a brilliant game with that limited amount of technology; what they can do with all the modern era game developing mechanisms. So mark your calendar, save money, as you are going to experience something beautiful, something unprecedented. Red Dead Redemption 2 is going to tell you "an epic tale of life in America’s unforgiving heartland” and will facilitate you with “the game's vast and atmospheric world will also provide the foundation for a brand new online multiplayer experience."
